Title: Principles and practices of irrigating agricultural land with food processing waste effluent: a review
Abstract: Wastewater irrigation of agricultural land for treatment
and disposal can be an effective management system that should
be, where feasible, a consideration for wastewater treatment.
Irrigating agricultural land with food processing, municipal, and
some industrial effluents has been successful for many years in
the USA, the Netherlands, and elsewhere where the systems were
conservatively designed and the water and nutrient applications
were not excessive (Smith, and others, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978,
1980, 1983; and DeHaan, et al. 1973,). Some advantages associated
with wastewater irrigation systems may relate to lower initial
costs of development than the conventional secondary wastewater
treatment but the cost advantage does not always remain with
irrigation systems.
