Beyond economic history it is being widely accepted and adopted by not only economists, but political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists and scholars from business schools and law schools as well. The reasons are not hard to see. This new approach confronts the very real problems of our society, integrates research from all the social sciences, draws from and integrates the results with micro-economic theory, and delves into the cognitive science sources of decision making. It is not surprising that it is enjoying ever increasing popularity as reflected in the creation of the International Society of the New Institutional Economics (ISNIE) and spectacularly successful international meetings first in St. Louis in 1997 with Ronald Cease as president and the second this past September in Paris where I was president. The first meeting had participants from 24 countries and at the most recent international meeting we could not accommodate all those who wanted to participate.Read More
