Title: Listening to farmers - agricultural extension in Senegal
Abstract: Understanding the perspective of farmers is key to the success of any activity aimed at improving their lives. Agricultural extension, which provides information to increase farmers' production, is particularly related to the point of view of the farmer. Extension work consists of two parts, the message (technical) and the communication (cultural); both have to be effective for extension to be of use. In mid-1994 a beneficiary assessment was conducted by the National Agricultural Extension Program (PHVA) of Senegal to systematically listen to the viewpoints of farmers from all parts of the country. The purpose of this assessment was to gain an understanding of how the farmers appreciated the extension work, which was patterned after the Training and Visit (TV but that as often as not the message was not transmitted, in large part due to the poor functioning of the contact group (CG), and the fact that women were particularly uninformed by the extension program.
