Abstract: Recent research shows that there is a difference in the ways that unskilled and skilled writers write. Furthermore, there are differences in the ways they rewrite. Better writers not only have strategies for correcting local problems such as word choice, grammar, and punctuation. They also deal with overall content and meaning of their writing by, adding, deleting, or reorganizing larger chunks of discourse as well. Unskilled writers lack these global strategies. This article supports the view that teachers of writing should structure their classes in ways that will help students expand their repertoire of strategies for rewriting compositions.
