Title: Brazilian schools: comparing students' interests with what is being taught
Abstract: Abstract The present work surveyed 2,302 Brazilian students (1,575 elementary school and 727 high school students) with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the role played by the contemporary school system in the education of its students. In general, it was observed that the students were not satisfied with what was being taught to them at school, for the school programme does not cover most of their interests. When asked what they did want to learn at school, the majority of students in the elementary school and in high school mentioned themes and/or activities that are not taught at school. The majority of the justifications given by the students for their preferences have a direct relation with their natural inclination, based on a subjective feeling of liking or disliking a given subject. The importance of 'vocation' on the students' career option and the difficulties they face at the time of decision when confronted, at the end of high school, with the increasing number of possibilities open to them is also a matter of discussion. Given the importance of school for the student's future life and career, it is felt that the dissatisfaction with the school programme detected in this study should be taken into account and a school programme with a new content should be considered to modify the present situation.
