The urban economics literature influenced by the Solow-Vickrey model has extensively studied the above relationship. In the present paper we re-examine the Solow-Vickrey model of the long narrow city by defining a new general mathematical formulation in which the urban shape is a function of the allocation of land for transport. We focus in particular on emergence conditions for different types of polycentric cities. The methodology discussed in the paper provides a new analytical framework for assessing the impact of urban transport flows on city growth.Read More
