From 1983 to 1988, he was a researcher at Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. He is a Research Associate in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University. During 1985-1986, he was with the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Houston. He received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree all in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Kyoto University in 1963, 1965, and 1968, respectively. From 1969 to 1986, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Precision Mechanics, Kyoto University. From 1971 to 1973, he was in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Houston, where he began working on systems reliability and safety.
