Title: Application Of Truck Electronics From The Viewpoint Of The System Integrator
Abstract: This paper presents the performance, goals and rationale for integrating electronic systems into medium and heavy duty trucks. Successful integration of these systems with today's trucks requires careful planning and a thorough "top down" vehicle system design. Each sector of the design must be documented by way of component and subsystem specifications or drawings. These forms of documentation serve their purpose when they are reviewed often during the active design phase and interfacing components are verified for compatibility. Providing an electrical component that meets its own electrical and environmental specifications will not always insure that the component will function properly when installed in the vehicle. Further, details and examples are presented to demonstrate these points. It is very critical that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and aftermarket suppliers should closely evaluate and analyze what effect a new electronic component may have on a vehicle's performance. Truck owners must realize that a modern vehicle is a collection of interacting systems and not merely a collection of parts.
