Title: The International Staging Committee of the IASLC: Its origins and purpose
Abstract: The proceedings of the International Workshop on Intrathoracic Staging, sponsored by the IASLC and organised in London in October, 1996, concluded that the IASLC should consider setting up an International Staging Committee to ‘establish internationally agreed definitions of complete and incomplete resection’, ‘co-ordinate the development of an International Nodal Chart’, ‘co-ordinate the exchange of data’ and to ‘represent the IASLC in negotiations with the UICC and AJCC with regard to future revisions of classification’ [ [1] Goldstraw P Report on the International workshop on intrathoracic staging. London, October. Lung Cancer. 1997; 18: 107-111 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF Google Scholar ]. This committee has now been established, is fully funded and is setting about its work. That being so, now seems a reasonable time to review the history of the project, establish the present position and consider the timetable we have been set.
