Title: On the Role of Cytidine Deaminase in Cellular Metabolism
Abstract: Pyrimidine nucleotides are synthesized either de novo or via salvage pathways from preformed pyrimidine compounds. The de novo pathway of UTP and CTP synthesis appears to be almost identical in the various organisms studied, while there are major differences in the pathways by which pyrimidine deoxynu-cleotides are synthesized. A few organism have been found to be unable to synthesize UMP de novo (1). However pyrimidine salvage appears to occur in all organisms studied, the salvage pathways seem diverse in their nature and distribution, and the various organisms and tissues studied differ significantly in their ability to metabolize exogenously supplied pyrimidine compounds.
