Upper‐class males and farmers married at a later age, while the working classes got married a few years earlier. Among females, the differences between the social classes were less clear with the highest ages at marriage among females who married casual and unskilled labourers. Marrying late was especially characteristic of the rural areas in the south and east of the country. The age at marriage dropped rapidly after 1860‐1870, particularly among casual and unskilled labourers, craftsmen and agricultural labourers. In the upper classes, only the age of males showed a decline, while the age development among farmers varied a lot according to the region. The age at marriage of farmers and shopkeepers, small entrepreneurs and merchants, and self‐employed artisans did not drop until after 1890. The author wishes to thank O. Hoogerhuis, G.A.
