Abstract: Highest priority for future research under the U.S. Antarctic Program should be given to the “extraction of the unique climatic record preserved in the Antarctic ice sheet” and to “the study of the response of marine life to the unique environment at the edge of sea ice.” That's the word from the National Research Council's (NRC) Polar Research Board, which was asked by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to recommend priorities for research efforts in the Antarctic. NSF funds the U.S. Antarctic Program. The board ranked eight large‐scale research projects in order of priority, identified three smaller, more specific projects that should be included in the U.S. Antarctic Program, and listed other necessary, supportive activities with “widespread implications and applications.”
