Title: A reliable and congestion control protocol for limited power wireless sensor networks
Abstract: Congestion is the most complicated issue that happens in WSN. It exists mainly in transport layer and in the MAC layer. Congestion happens due to disagreement caused by buffer overflows, concurrent transmissions and dynamically unstable wireless channel condition. In this paper, we propose to develop a reliable and congestion control protocol, which uses the parameter, packet allocation rate (PAR) to control the congestion. Our scheme has three phases namely congestion detection, congestion notification and congestion control. The detection phase depends on the threshold value of packet sending ratio, going below which causes congestion in the network. The notification phase notifies the value of PAR to the parent nodes to adjust the allocation rates. In the third phase, the parents adjust their allocation rate to control congestion and gain to its initial rate in the post-congestion period. Our technique uses the allocation rate in an effective and controlled manner, thus providing an efficient and reliable technique for congestion control in the wireless sensor network. By simulation results, we show that our proposed protocol achieves high throughput and packet delivery ratio with reduced packet drop, when compared with the existing protocols.
