Title: Bicyclic compounds containing a pyridine ring; Quinoline and its derivatives
Abstract: This chapter focuses on the importance of the quinoline nucleus in natural and physiologically active structures and molecules of actual or potential drug used. Emphasis increased on natural product synthesis, bio- and biomimetic chemistry, and the quinoline structure figured in the formulation of combinatorial libraries. The accumulation of libraries represents a quantum jump in synthetic methodology, encompassing the making and screening of thousands of compounds with systematic structural variations. The rigid structure and reactive N centre also make the quinoline molecular of particular relevance in molecular design of large molecular assemblies and materials chemistry. The economic and academic thrusts complement one another, and both of these aspects are presented in the chapter . The properties of quinoline derivatives discuss the physical, structural and spectral properties. The Diels-Alder reactivity of heteroaromatic analogues of o-quinodimethane generated from the appropriate o-bischloro compounds is also investigated, and the reactivity factors are discussed in terms of molecular orbital theory.
