While business was the original research object of Forrester and his group, due to the systems and control theory perspective at its heart, stretching the scope of System Dynamics to other systems happened as a natural next step. We argue that System Dynamics is particularly suitable for sustainability research because it provides (1) a structural theory focusing on feedback, accumulation, delays, and non-linearities within dynamic systems and (2) a methodology to formulate content theories for a broad range of sustainability issues that can rigorously be tested and be analyzed using computer simulations. This statement is substantiated by a selective review of the literature on System-Dynamics-based sustainability research, which shows that the history of the sustainable development movement and System Dynamics is interwoven.
