From phrasal verbs to idioms, from greeting formulae to song lyrics, ‘formulaic sequences are ubiquitous in language use’ (Nattinger and DeCarrico 1992: 66). A plethora of names and definitions have been assigned to this phenomenon in a body of literature which has been primarily descriptive in nature. In Schmitt's collection of papers, however, a notably fresh approach has been taken. Ten empirically based studies are presented which look into various properties and functions of FS with an emphasis on their relevance to second language learners. The book makes a welcome contribution to the literature by presenting this experimental analysis of FS. Furthermore, by focusing on second language acquisition, the book provides insights which will be both practical and thought-provoking for those in the field of EFL.Read More
