Abstract: ABSTRACT The prelingually deaf, whose first language is American Sign (ASL), have a need to learn English just as do individuals coming from other countries. The teaching methods of English as a second language have proved successful when applied to deaf education and there is a need for improved cooperation between teachers of the deaf and teachers of ESL.
