The authors embarked on the work because they recognised that the wildlife trade is likely to remove many of the key species in Laos while conservation efforts are focussing on forest conservation and management. They found that many programme designers and decision-makers were relying on a handful of reports from the period 1990-93, even though the situation has changed dramatically since them.
