Title: Emission Prediction and Control Strategy: Evaluation of Pollution from Transportation Systems
Abstract: THE TOTAL SYSTEMS APPROACH PRESENTED HERE IS BASED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF TWO MODELS: A VEHICLE EMISSIONS MODEL AND AN URBAN TRANSPORTATION MODEL. THE VEHICLE EMISSIONS MODEL, WHICH TAKES A NEW APPROACH TO VEHICLE EMISSIONS BY DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN HOT AND VEHICLE OPERATION, IS REVIEWED. SUCH AN APPROACH IS IMPORTANT SINCE BY 1975 IT IS EXPECTED THAT NEW CARS WILL EMIT 85 PERCENT OF THEIR CARBON MONOXIDE AND HYDROCARBONS DURING COLD OPERATION. THE METHOD OF INTEGRATION OF THE VEHICLE EMISSIONS MODEL TO AN URBAN MODEL IS ALSO DISCUSSED AND ILLUSTRATED WITH DATA FROM THE CHICAGO AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY.
