Abstract: In dealing with abusive parents, social workers are thrown into a reparenting role that is demanding and conflictual and contributes to burnout among workers. The author suggests that workers focus on strengthening parents' feelings of competence as a positive, stress-reducing approach to the reparenting role. She analyzes the various responsibilities of the worker as a nurturer-cum-educator and describes techniques that can be used in reparenting.
