Title: Linguistic Description and Auditory Perception
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of occupational background of engineers, musicians and secretaries upon their verbal description of tones differing in pitch, intermittency and modulation. In the experiment, where no cues were provided, Ss, regardless of occupation, displayed little consistency in responses. Ss' responses were classified into three broad categories: onomatopoeic, illustrative, and physical. Engineers tended to favour illustrative responses, secretaries the onomatopoeic responses, and the musicians the physical responses. Musicians utilized physical responses significantly more often than the other two groups.
