Title: An investigation of the suitability of the peri-articular osteophyte as an autologous graft for the repair of articular surface defects
Abstract: The articular cartilage is probably designed to last the lifetime of the synovial joint of an individual. However, as an individual advances in age, the ability to maintain a healthy articular cartilage is lost. This is hastened by repeated trauma leading to attrition, wear, or even a single excessive traumatic episode. Once the articular cartilage is damaged, at least in an adult, it is not accompanied by the regeneration of normal articular cartilage. The repair tissue, thus formed at the site of the full-thickness articular cartilage defect in adults, has been shown to be inferior to normal articular cartilage mechanically, biochemically and functionally (Coletti et al., 1972).
