Title: Rural Poverty Reduction Strategy for South Asia
Abstract: Although the share of South Asia in the world's total poor declined by roughly 10 percentage points between 1990 and 2000, this region still accounts for about 40 per cent of the total poor (Table 19.1). Using the headcount ratio, about one third of the population in South Asia was under the poverty line in 2000. The success of poverty reduction in South Asia will be crucial in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty by the year 2015.
