Abstract: A serious public health problem of distracted drivers is being created by the rapid proliferation of portable cell phones and personal organizers, the development of more-sophisticated entertainment systems and instrument panel controls, the advent of navigation and television displays in vehicles and the promises of wireless e-mail, fax and Internet services in the vehicle. Despite drivers' insistence that they are capable of multitasking, these distracted drivers are causing a growing number of crash-related injuries. Laws to mitigate distractions have proven difficult to enforce and product design remedies will be slow to arrive and may be circumvented. Targeted health promotion should be a key component in correction and prevention efforts because distracted driving may be habit-forming and difficult to change. Intensive research projects should be undertaken to discover the best and most effective methods to change driver attitudes and behavior related to safe driving and crash injury reduction.
