Title: GENDER AND THE USE OF SUPPLICATION AND INTIMIDATION IN ORGANIZATIONS.
Abstract: This study examines the role that gender plays in determining the outcomes of attempts to manage impressions through the use of supplication and intimidation. The results suggest that men use supplication more frequently than women; however, men and women do not differ in the extent to which they use intimidation. In terms of the consequences of these impression-management behaviors, there was a significant interaction between gender and the use of supplication and intimidation. Specifically, while the use of supplication and intimidation was positively associated with supervisor ratings of performance among men, the use of such tactics was negatively related to supervisor ratings of performance among women. The implications of these findings for future research on gender differences in impression management are discussed.
