Title: Changes in the Stakeholder Management Process
Abstract: The topic of this thesis is “Changes in the Stakeholder Management Process” and refers to the changes being made to the guideline for stakeholder management (GL0013) in Statoil. The new GL0013 has been gradually implemented in some projects during the semester, but it has not yet been possible to analyse any actual results from the implementation. This study has focused on the new process, its implementation and suggestions for further improvement of the stakeholder management process. This report gives a summary of the observations and findings done during the work on the master thesis. In order to understand the concept of stakeholder management, a literature study is carried out. It is found to be a lot of literature on stakeholder management, but this study advertises for a common formal stakeholder management process. Much of the literature on stakeholder management refers to the book “Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach” written by Edward Freeman in 1984; Freeman is said to be the father of stakeholder management. The report gives an introduction to the history of stakeholder management, explains the characteristics of stakeholder management with introductions tocommon stakeholder groups, introduces AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard; the firstinternational published standard on stakeholder management, and discusses stakeholder management with connected themes like strategic management, risk management and ethics. The management system in Statoil and governing documentation on stakeholder management is studied, and the differences between the old and the new process is analysed. The biggest differences between the two processes is found to be the following-up of stakeholders whichwas lacking description in the old process, but which is included in the new. Three projects were chosen for further study because of their increased risks connected tostakeholder management compared to the average project in Statoil; Luva, Sheringham Shoaland Full-scale Carbon Capture Mongstad (CCM). QR managers, communication responsibleand others from these projects have been interviewed, and the business case leadership teamsfrom the projects participated in a questionnaire. The data gathered from these projects, together with the literature studied, created the basis for the conclusions made in this thesis. The study analyses the new guideline for the stakeholder management process and suggestsareas of improvement for the guideline as well as for stakeholder management in general. Thefindings resulted in a three-step model towards successful stakeholder management; the roadto success.
