Title: An automated optimization approach to conceptual design of naval combatants aided by computer graphics
Abstract: The objective of this study is to interface the Advanced Surface Ship Evaluation Tool (ASSET) program, developed by the DTNSRDC with assistance by the Boeing Computer Services, with the Automated Optimization (COPES) program, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. In addition a computer graphics capability was added to enhance the information output and perception. The selection of the important input parameters of the optimization process is given through a design example using the ASSET/COPES/GRAPHICS Synthesis System. Selected design studies are performed to show the merits of the system. The ASSET/COPES/GRAPHICS Synthesis System provides results in a rapid, descriptive, and inexpensive manner which compare favourably with existing designs, and offers to the naval architect an efficient tool to use in the conceptual design stage of naval surface combatants.
