Title: Studies of the Diurnal Pattern of Plasma Corticosteroids and Gonadotropins in Two Cases of Feminizing Adrenal Carcinoma: Measurements of Estrogen and Corticosteroid Production
Abstract: Diurnal patterns of plasma corticosteroids, gonadotropins, estradiol, estetrol, 11-desoxycortisol, DHEA-S, DHEA, and testosterone were determined in 2 men with feminizing adrenal cortical carcinoma. Normal episodic and circadian rhythms of corticosteroids were observed, though at higher levels. Production rates of cortisol were markedly increased, even though mean 24-hour cortisol levels showed only a marginal increase. Plasma 11-desoxycortisol levels and production rate were increased in 1 patient, while THS excretion was elevated in the other. There was also a marked increase in plasma and urinary levels of estradiol and in its production. In comparison with estrone, estradiol, and estetrol, the specific activity of estriol was decreased. Supplementary data on human chorionic gonadotropin levels suggest that these tumors may function like trophoblastic tissue. The possibility that estetrol may be a marker for tumors of trophoblastic origin is noted.
