Title: Dominance, Agonistic and Territorial Behaviour in Institutionalized Mentally Retarded Patients
Abstract: In a group of 20 mentally retarded patients an interactional dominance hierarchy was obtained by observing the frequency of patient contacts, the duration of contact and the frequency of contact initiation. A hierarchy based on the initiation, and reception of agonistic behaviour was also obtained. The interactional dominance hierarchy was positively related to the agonistic hierarchy and to patient clinical behaviour condition. It was found that 17 of the 20 patients studied displayed territorial behaviour. The more dominant had the larger territories and those in adjoining positions in the dominance hierarchy had distant territories. By studying agonistic behaviour much information can be obtained concerning a person's status within a group.
