Title: Roles for deterministic bounding in environmental modelling
Abstract: Over the past decade or so, deterministic bounding of the parameters or state variables of dynamical system models has become a viable alternative to probabilistic estimation for some applications. The paper presents the basic idea of bounding and the reasons why bounding may offer an attractive alternative to other estimation techniques. Established bound-computation techniques are reviewed and a number of unresolved practical issues limiting the application of bounding are discussed.
