Abstract: Social support for cancer patients can come in various forms: emotional support (verbal and non-verbal communication of caring and concern), instrumental support (provision of material goods such as transportation, money, household chores), and informational support (provision of information to guide or advise). The most important kind of support patients can receive from family, specifically one's spouse, is emotional support. In fact, the absence of emotional support from one's spouse can be harmful.
