(1987) Finding buried treasures; aesthetic scanning with children. Art Education, 40 1. pp. 41–43. 8 I have identified three books that were most helpful in defining the content of the course: LAUER, D. A. (1979) Design Basics. New York , Holt, Rinehart, and Winston; FELDMAN, E. B. (1982) The Artist, (Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Prentice-Hall; McCARTER, W. & GILBERT, R. (1985) Living with Art New York, Alfred K. Knopf. Other publications I would recommend to teachers interested in implementing the proposed curriculum include FLEMING, W. (7th edition, 1986) Arts and Ideas. New York, Holt, Rinehart and Winston and FAULKNER, R., ZIEGFELD, E. & SMAGULA, H. (6th edition, 1987) Art Today. New York, Holt, Rinehart and Winston. Although some of these books can serve as textbooks. I have decided to teach the course in a way that would not require students to purchase any books in order to succeed in the course. Obviously, the cost of books is high, and there is no single publication which would deal with all the issues covered in the class. Therefore, it seemed more appropriate to place copies of the most helpful books on reserve in the school library and encourage students to take notes from lectures and presentation. 9 Students' achievement in this course in this course is assesed using formal testing techniques, as well as less formal method of evaluation. Two major examinations are administered, one in the middle and one at the end of the semester. These include multiple choice items, short answer items, as well as essay question. Additionally, several short quizzes, mostly related to reading assignments, are used as assessment tools. Students are also graded on the quality of thier presenatations as well as the written critiques. Active participation in class discussions constitutes another evalution criterion.
