Title: Hysterosalpingogram Confirmation of Total Tubal Occlusion 42-56 Days Status Post Hysteroscopic Sterilization Via Essure
Abstract: Study Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of hysterosalpingogram confirmation of total tubal occlusion 42-56 days status post hysteroscopic sterilization via Essure. Design: Retrospective study between the periods of January 1, 2009 – April 12, 2010. Setting: Howard University Hospital - an inner city urban teaching hospital. Patients: Women of reproductive age desiring minimally-invasive form of sterilization via Essure. Intervention: Hysterosalpingogram post-Essure. Measurements and Main Results: All patients billed for CPT Code 58565 by our institution between January 1, 2009 – April 12, 2010, where offered post procedural hysterosalpingogram. Five patients underwent hysterosalpingogram evaluation between 42 – 56 days status post sterilization via Essure. Total tubal occlusion was observed in 100% of the cases. 40% (2/5) of the group had a hysterosalpingogram at 44 days which revealed total tubal occlusion. The remaining 60% (3/5) had the procedure performed after day 44 but prior to or at day 56 post-Essure with total tubal occlusion. Conclusion: Post procedural hysterosalpingogram 42 - 56 days following Hysteroscopic sterilization may represent an effective paradigm shift in an effort to improve patient compliance. Larger prospective studies are warranted.
