Title: Flow conditions in a packed bed through local measurements
Abstract: Abstract Flow characteristics were determined using special electrical conductivity probes, and local events in a packed bed were viewed with a resolution of the size of the packing elements. Local measurements focused on flow distribution, dead water zones, velocity profiles, wetting and residence time distribution. Some results discriminate between the conflicting views of previous authors, whilst others lead to a new outlook. In particular it can be shown that an increase in liquid flow rate results in an increase in wetted packing area at constant film thickness until the packing becomes entirely wetted. The concept of a network of paths is substantiated, the discontinuous features of the flow mechanism being stressed.
