Title: POSTOPERATIVE DEPRESSION OF THE LYMPHOCYTE RESPONSE TO PHYTOHÆMAGGLUTININ
Abstract: The effects of operation on the lymphocyte response to phytohæmagglutinin have been investigated in five patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. The percentage of lymphocytes in the peripheral blood undergoing transformation in response to phytohæmagglutinin fell significantly postoperatively. Differential lymphocyte-counts in two patients showed that changes in the proportion of small and large lymphocytes could not account for this fall. The most likely reason for the observed depression is that it was a result of operative trauma.
