Title: Antigenic analysis of influenza a virus surface antigens: Considerations for the nomenclature of influenza virus
Abstract: The surface antigens of a comprehensive collection of prototype and other strains of influenza A virus of human, swine, equine and avian origin were studied in immuno-double-diffusion tests with antisera to purified hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens. These tests were selected because of their ability to reveal antigenic relationships which may not be apparent by conventional hemagglutination and neuraminidase-inhibition techniques. The antigenic analyses of strains, based on immuno-double-diffusion tests, which are described would permit the classification of influenza A viruses into twelve groups of H antigens and nine groups of N antigens. It was notable that amongst the influenza A viruses of avian origin there exist H and N antigens representative of each of the five H antigen groups (H1, H2, H3, Heq1 and Heq2) and four N antigen groups (N1, N2, Neq1 and Neq2) found amongst human, swine and equine influenza viruses. Seven H antigenic subtypes (Hav2-Hav6, Hav8 and Hav9) and five N antigen subtypes (Nav1, Nav2, Nav 4, Nav5 and Nav6) have been isolated so far only from avian species.
