Abstract: Discusses the recent classification schemes for arenites of Pettijohn, Gilbert, Packham, and Folk. A more generalized scheme is suggested after the MLQ (matrix, labiles, quartz) diagram of Packham which enables a classification of arenites when data on sedimentary structures are not available. A new QFR (quartz, feldspar, rock fragments) diagram is introduced. When used in conjunction with Packham9s classification, an arenite can be named in the field or in the laboratory and, after study of the sedimentary structures, a final name can be given with both descriptive and genetic connotations. Pyroclastic arenites, glacial arenites, and arenites with abundant detrital carbonate are not included under the present classification scheme.
