Title: Contextual considerations in the semantic analysis of intonation
Abstract: The paper considers the relevance of contextual factors in specifying the attitudinal meaning of intonation contours and tries to offer a new way of approaching the subject. Following a reappraisal of the manner in which intonation may reflect emotive meaning, the article sets out to show that the emotive potential of contours may be discussed in a principled way without taking recourse to extralinguistic considerations. On this account, the role of contextual variables is limited to the actual naming of the emotive effects of contours whose attitudinal potential is established on independent grounds.
