Title: Acoustic intensity-energy density ratio: An index for detecting deviations from ideal field conditions
Abstract: Abstract The in-duct two-microphone method of Chung and Blaser is extended to include measurement of acoustic energy density. General transform relations are established between the sound pressure auto- and cross-spectral densities measured by using a two-microphone probe and the corresponding sound pressure data for the forward- and the backward-travelling wave components. From these relations formulas for the potential and kinetic energy density are derived for the special case of no flow. A field index F is proposed; it is the ratio between the net intensity and an apparent intensity represented by Ec0, where E is the total energy density and c0 the sound speed. The usefulness of the proposed index as a field indicator is demonstrated by measurements in the near field of a junction between two tubes of different cross-section.
