Title: THE PARALLEL SOLUTION OF TRIDIAGONAL AND BLOCK TRIDIAGONAL SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS BY A SCHUR COMPLEMENT METHOD
Abstract: Abstract The solution of tridiagonal and block tridiagonal systems of equations represents one of the basic problems of numerical linear algebra. In the present paper, we describe a parallel method which is based on the use of Schur complements. When compared to previously introduced parallel methods, this method preserves all necessary mathematical properties in all its parts while a high numerical efficiency can be guaranteed. The paper includes a short comparison with other relevant methods, illustrated by the results of numerical tests carried out on a CRAY Y-MP.
