Title: Secondary metabolites from Centaurea orphanidea
Abstract: The aerial parts of Centaurea orphanidea, a Greek endemic species belonging to section Acrolophus (Cass.) DC., were investigated for the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactones. Cnicin and 4′-O-acetylcnicin were the major compounds. Cnicin is the common marker of this section. In addition to the sesquiterpene lactones, four flavonoid aglycons and two lignans were found, namely dimethylmatairesinol and pinoresinol. This is the first report of dimethylmatairesinol in Asteraceae.
