Title: Fluorescence and photoisomerization of two stilbene-based dyes
Abstract: The effect of solvent on the fluorescence and direct trans-cis photoisomerization of two stilbene-based fluorescent whitening agents has been investigated. With increasing solvent polarity there is an increase in the rate of photoisomerization resulting in reduced fluorescence quantum yields. This solvent polarity dependence is particularly marked for the bis(triazinylamino) stilbene dye and the results are discussed with reference to previous studies on model compounds. A comparison is made between the fluorescence lifetimes determined for the dyes in solution, embedded in poly(vinyl alcohol) film and adsorbed onto wool fabric. Fluorescence lifetimes of the dyes on wool fabric are shorter than expected and possible explanations for this observation are presented.
