Title: Vaginal surgery for stress urinary incontinence
Abstract: Urinary incontinence is a common source of physical and social disability, resulting in an estimated direct cost of $10 billion per year in the United States. Stress urinary incontinence results in significant morbidity in between one quarter to one third of middle-aged and elderly women, and its evaluation and treatment comprise a significant component. of the average urologist’s clinical practice. Therapeutic efforts for stress urinary incontinence should be tailored to the severity of the symptoms and their effects on the patient’s function, and directed toward correction of the underlying pathophysiology responsible for the condition. In general, stress incontinence is only one manifestation of a deficiency of pelvic support. Associated anatomic abnormalities accompanying those resulting in the incontinence also must be considered during the evaluation and treatment of stress urinary incontinence.
