Work continues to identify and resolve the basic absentee fa...I N T R O D U C T I O N It has been reported that absences cost the American economy about $9 billion yearly in lost production and wages.' Work continues to identify and resolve the basic absentee factors that are controllable, with the long-run hope of reducing the degree of absenteeism. In the short run, however, there is a need to develop more effective means to cope with the negative consequences of absenteeism as it now exists. Currently, the way the problem of absenteeism is sometimes faced is to set up a force of personnel. This force consists of people who are paid a certain amount of money in order to stay home and be available for call to duty. If they are called to duty, they receive the same pay as the regularly scheduled employees; if they are not called, each person receives a substantially smaller amount. This paper addresses the problem of planning the size of this standby force and presents a real-world example applied to a 7-day food-service system.Read More
