However, according to Xu Fuming, a contemporary scholar of Chinese ...In the study of traditional Chinese drama, the works of women writers have escaped the close attention of most scholars and critics. However, according to Xu Fuming, a contemporary scholar of Chinese drama, during the late Ming and the Qing there were at least twenty-three women playwrights. These women came from different social classes. Most of them were scholar-officials' daughters and wives, a few were from merchant families, and some were courtesans. They created a total number of over fifty-five plays in both zaju and chuanqi forms, of which eighteen plays in its entirety and two in parts are extant. The plots of these dramas were either based on historical sources or literary narratives, or were derived from their own life experiences and artistic imaginations.Read More
