Title: Ayliffe's control of healthcare-associated infection: a practical handbook
Abstract: Adam P. Fraise and Christina Bradley have collaborated again as editors of the fifth edition of Ayliffe's control of healthcare-associated infection. This comes with a subtly changed title, a 25% increase to 512 pages, and several new chapters. The new front cover illustration is presumably of colonies of staphylococci, but resembles furry Smarties in five different colours. There is an expanded list of contributors, mostly household names within the infection control community, each dealing with their own area of expertise. An immediate attraction, somewhat surprising, was that I found most of the book very readable, considering that one might expect this to be a fairly dry subject. A less welcome change is that many of the user-friendly lists of the previous edition have been lost, though their contents can still be found by searching through the text.
