Title: The role of ultrasound and Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology in staging the axilla in breast cancer patients
Abstract: Introduction: Sentinel node biopsy is now standard practice for staging the axilla in breast cancer patients. A downside of performing sentinel node biopsy is the need for a second axillary operation (axillary node clearance) if the sentinel node shows metastases. This study investigates the role of axillary ultrasound and fine needle aspirate cytology (FNAC) in identifying patients with axillary metastases who could avoid an unnecessary sentinel node biopsy and proceed directly to an axillary node clearance.
