Title: Assembly Pheromone of Triatoma Infestans and Rhodnius Prolixus Nymphs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)
Abstract: Unfed nymphs of Triatoma infestans and Rhodnius prolixus were attracted to 5-cm2 papers contaminated with feces from nymphs of either species. Recently fed nymphs were not attracted. Experiments in which a juvenile hormone mimic was also incorporated with fecal-contaminated papers, as a marker both of contact with such papers and of the length of time spent on them, showed that nymphal fecal material arrested the locomotory activity of fed bugs rather than attracting them. From these results it was concluded that a pheromone is present in nymphal feces which attracts unfed nymphs, and that this, or another pheromone, could arrest the locomotion of fed nymphs.
