Title: The reaction of (+)—catechin with formaldehyde
Abstract: Abstract An examination has been made of the estimation of formaldehyde in the presence of (+) — catechin and its reaction products. The reaction of formaldehyde with (+) — catechin under different conditions has been studied analytically and the products examined chromatographically. The reaction at room temperature for 15 min. occurs to a very limited extent at pH 4.5 but increases under alkaline or more acid conditions, where it appears to be confined to the phloroglucinol ring. The catechol ring appeared to react at 100° at pH 8 and 10 or in presence of zinc acetate at pH 5.5. The use of catechin as a model compound for condensed tannins is discussed.
