Abstract: Siobhan A. Mooney and Professor Peter K. Smith, of the Department of Psychology at the University of Sheffield, report that dysfluent children are often shy and lacking in confidence and may face a constant stream of difficulties, especially in school. Their studies indicate that children who stammer may experience a high degree of bullying and that the detrimental effects (which may continue into adulthood) require intervention.
